Kerry had been raised by an aunt since her mother died when she was five. A doctor, arriving from Venice, tells Kerry that her mother and a married count had fallen in love all those years ago, but she had died in a car accident following a 15th century pageant honoring her. On hearing of Stella's death, the count became obsessed with the idea that he was living in that century and that Stella would return to him one day. The doctor wants Kerry to return with him to Venice. He hopes that seeing Stella's grown-up daughter will cure the count of his madness.
