Due to hard times, Nancy had become companion in London to an elderly invalid. Returning home to the fishing town of Harnock after Miss Digby's death, Nancy looked forward to seeing her family and fiance. However, on the night of her return, she sees her fiance and her brother's wife locked in a passionate embrace. She breaks off with her fiance, but keeps the reason a secret to protect her brother. Soon Nancy falls for an out-of-work seaman, but her former fiance wants her back, especially when he finds out she is getting a £5000 legacy from her former employer.
