Jenny, an orphan, had been brought up by her father's widowed friend with her own two sons at Millwood Farm. Now Owen, the elder son, has his own business, but is secretly married with a baby on the way while facing financial problems. Jim, a scapegrace, is at college in London. 'Aunt' Hester, hoping to make a man of Jim, changes her will to leave the farm to Jenny with a secret provision that the farm would revert to Jim after a year provided he worked for Jenny for a year and stay out of trouble. After Hester's death, Jenny struggles under the burdens imposed on her by the will.
