In the first half of the eighteenth century, the escort party accompanying Fiona across the Scottish Highlands to marry the Laird of McGairn is attacked by the clan MacLyvie. She falls for the leader of her captors, but believes he has died trying to escape the McGairn when she sees his ship dashed on the rocks. Disconsolate, she is forced to marry and become the Lady of McGairn. Years later, news came that a champion of the Highland cause had returned to his own land to raise the standards of rebellion against the English. Fiona learns that the champion is her long, lost love, still alive.
