Paula's father, the governor of Malaja, has forbidden her to see Jack, a man with a reputation as a smuggler. Disobeying his wishes, she attempts to swim out to his schooner in the bay, but ends up sneaking onto the wrong boat where she meets Mike Collins. Later, she uses Mike to give her and her friend passage to Baria where she plans to secretly meet Jack. However, on the way there she discovers that Jack has planted stolen pearls in a stole he gave her. Paula realizes Jack is using her to smuggle the stolen pearls.
