John, a wealthy shipping tycoon, asks Carol to marry him, but she doesn't love him. That evening, Carol's flat mate is out at an all-night party with another boy when Jan's boyfriend shows up. Spending time together that evening, Carol and Bill immediately realize they love each other. Bill plans to tell Jan about them, but they are involved in a car accident before he breaks the news. Jan is badly hurt and Bill is charged with manslaughter when the driver of the other car dies. John agrees to use his influence to get Bill acquitted if Carol will marry him.
