The previous Christmas, Alex was offered a job in Australia and wanted to marry Patty before he sailed. Patty's parents said no since they had only known each other two months. Alex had agreed and promised to send her an engagement ring next Christmas so they could be married the following Easter. When the next Christmas arrives, a friend of Alex from Australia shows up in the old country and looks up Patty on Alex's request. Patty enjoys the way Dick sees Christmas there as something fresh and new until they kiss each other under the mistletoe. Then Dick gives Patty a letter from Alex.
