For the two years that Ann had been Robert's secretary, she had been in love with him. When he returns from a long stay in London, he is accompanied by his new fiance and her cousin. Ann is devastated and the cousin is able to perceive her true feelings. He tells her his wife died four years ago and offers her the job of being governess to his young daughter. She accepts the job and their shared bond of a lost love brings them closer until Robert shows up, announcing that his engagement is off. He says he realizes that it is Ann he loves and he wants to marry her.
