Elaine comes from a poor family and works as a department store salesclerk. Childhood friend Vince, now in medical school, proposes marriage. Elaine is swept off her feet by playboy Roy, who also proposes. Roy, driving drunk, hits a girl crossing the street. Elaine realises he’ll never do any “useful work” in life and goes back to Vince.
