“Easy to Love!”

In "Easy to Love!" from Love Diary #36 (1953), a 10-cent gem of a romance, swimmer Edith finds herself caught between her natural confidence and a well-meaning brother’s advice to play the part of a helpless damsel. Written by Bill Woolfolk and brought to life with dynamic, expressive art by John Buscema—both inks and pencils—this heartfelt story captures a tender moment where authenticity wins over pretense. The cover, also by Buscema, perfectly frames the emotional turning point with a classic, nostalgic charm.

Expert swimmer Edith has a crush on handsome lifeguard Bill, but he seems to prefer women who just lounge on the beach. Edith’s brother Tod tells her “no guy likes his girl to be a female Tarzan” and advises her to pretend to be “soft and feminine and helpless.” Edith tries, but when Bill is injured trying to rescue a drowning boy, Edith dives in and saves them both. Bill tells her that he prefers “someone who’s a real person and not just a pretty doll in a bathing suit,” and they kiss.
