Lila’s family loses its fortune in the Depression and her father dies. Her mother tells Lila “you’ve got to devote your life to snaring a wealthy man!” They move to a small town in Vermont. Lila is courted by wealthy Philip but finds him a bore; for fun, she dates regular-guy Cary. Middle-aged John is her next target, then rich and ruthless Gordon, a “middle-aged man with a dollar sign for a heart.” When a financial panic threatens the town, Lila learns Cary is the president of the local bank. He proposes marriage, and they wed.
