Little Max Comics #61

Harvey's pint-sized pal gets the jack-in-the-box treatment on this cheerful 1959 cover, where a wide-eyed little tot recoils in surprise as a spring-loaded Max pops out of a green "Max in the Box" toy. Warren Kremer's linework gives both figures a wonderfully rubbery, expressive energy — the startled child clutching the box crank is every bit as entertaining as the grinning Max bouncing on his spring. It's a perfect snapshot of the lighthearted fun that made Little Max Comics a staple of the Harvey lineup.
