While his parents and the staff are away, Richie hikes around the estate grounds and comes across Herman the Hermit, who has been living in a cave on the Riches' property for thirty years. Operating under the assumption that anything on "his" land belongs to him, Herman locks Richie out of the Rich mansion, but soon finds that the changes to civilization in the past thirty years are too much for him, so he runs away.
