When her father refuses and she needs something cheap that costs nothing, Audrey and a boy find old furniture in the cellar and set up an impromptu business washing windows and doing odd jobs. Their scheme spirals into chaos when they connect a garden hose to what they think is a water supply line, flooding the neighborhood and nearly catching on a clothesline before being stopped by an adult.
When Little Audrey comes down with what she claims is the worst sickness ever, her mother doses her with castor oil—prompting Audrey to go on the lam. To earn money and avoid her medicine, Audrey and her friend Patches start a messenger service, "Audrey and Patches Inc.," taking on local errands for a few cents each. But their first customer, the reluctant Mr. Dolan, might teach them that running a business is trickier than they bargained for.
When Audrey's parents plan to rent out the guest room to help with the housing shortage, she hatches a scheme to keep it occupied—by her imaginary giraffes that eat only green jelly beans. Rather than let the room go to a stranger, Audrey and her friend Patches build a backyard shack and advertise it as a rental instead, leading unsuspecting renters on a merry chase. It's a clever bit of mischief that shows how one resourceful girl can outsmart her well-meaning parents while protecting what matters most to her.
