Literary Life #[nn]
"Rustic Block" is a quietly subversive gem from Posy Simmonds, who writes, draws, inks, and letters this 2003 tale of aging residents at a crumbling old folks' home. When the staff’s lavish birthday plans for the owners spark outrage over neglected care, two residents unexpectedly meet their fairy godmother—offering a chance to reclaim their youth, though not without complications. The story’s warmth and wit are perfectly matched by Simmonds’s expressive, finely detailed art, both in the interior and on the cover, which she also created.
