Lt. Frank Luke, Jr. was a twenty-year-old Arizona pilot who joined the 27th Squadron in September 1918 and quickly became one of the war's most formidable airmen, credited with an extraordinary seventeen balloon victories in just seventeen days. On September 18th alone, he downed two balloons, two Fokker fighters, and a reconnaissance aircraft in a breathtaking seven-minute span—a record that still stands.
