“Le Châtiment du banni”

Set against a moonlit forest rendered in brooding shades of blue-grey, this seventeenth volume of Les Aigles Décapitées — subtitled Le Châtiment du banni — promises intrigue and danger in equal measure. The cover by Jean-Charles Kraehn frames two cloaked figures in the foreground, swords drawn, their attention fixed on a distant campfire where horses and shadowy forms gather between the trees. Arnoux and Pierret's long-running medieval series continues in fine form with this 2003 Glénat entry, and the atmosphere alone makes it impossible to look away.
