It's 1943 in German-occupied France. Believed to have been killed when the train transporting him to Germany crashed, Julien returns to his small French town and hides in the empty house of a teacher also sent to Germany, only letting his Aunt know he's still alive. He watches life unfold during the day, and explores at night, learning a lot about his town and the inhabitants. Unfortunately he's also got to keep away from his girlfriend.
