Marc-Antoine, le frère de Madeleine, de retour après 2 ans passés en métropole a bien changé. Il veut rentabiliser l'exploitation, n'hésitant pas à brutaliser les esclaves et s'oppose au mariage entre sa sœur et Tristan qui est certes son ami, mais d'abord un métis. Au cours d'une altercation entre les deux jeunes gens, le père de Marc-Antoine est tué. Tristan prend la fuite.
