Joann Sfar brings his sweeping Slavic saga to a close with Klezmer Volume 5: Kishinev-des-fous — and the cover sets a haunting tone immediately. A solitary figure in a red coat stands in a storm of swirling snow and ghostly faces, blood-red drops staining the white ground beneath their feet, while two enormous spectral visages loom overhead. Sfar's loose, expressive linework makes this 2014 finale from Gallimard feel both intimately human and achingly vast, a fitting capstone to one of French comics' most soulful musical odysseys.
