“The Guns of Drago Dalton!”

Marvel's long-running western series puts Kid Colt in a tight spot in this 1975 issue, as the cover by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers shows the white-hatted outlaw unarmed and surrounded — prison-striped convicts close in from both sides while uniformed guards stand at the ready behind him. The cover copy promises a full-length thriller, "The Guns of Drago Dalton!", and asks whether the Kid has finally reached the end of his rope, with one convict declaring he'll never leave alive. It's a genuinely gripping setup that captures everything fans loved about Marvel's western titles in their prime.

Three outlaws trick Kid Colt into surrendering to the authorities in order to obtain a reduced sentence, and a possible pardon, thereby putting his outlaw days behind him. However, when a judge sentences him to five to ten years at hard labor, he escapes and brings the outlaws to justice. Then Kid Colt runs again, resuming his life as a fugitive.
