Volume 2 of Kaijin Reijou (Slasher Maidens) from Square Enix wastes no time establishing its unsettling tone — the cover presents a long-haired young woman in a school uniform whose crimson eyes and blood-streaked mouth hint at something far from ordinary beneath that composed expression. Her skeletal, clawed right hand adds a striking contrast to the otherwise student-like appearance, and the deep amber glow behind her gives the whole image an eerie, almost theatrical atmosphere. Tetsuya Tashiro's manga clearly revels in that tension between the familiar and the monstrous.
