David Mack's watercolor artistry is on full display in this 1999 Image Comics issue, where a vulnerable young woman — a vivid red wound blooming at her back — gazes upward while ghostly, elaborately painted faces loom in the soft violet haze above her. The tension between fragility and the striking theatrical mask-work of those spectral figures gives the cover an almost meditative pull. Issue #SE7EN of Kabuki is a reminder of why Mack's blend of poetry and visual art earned the series its reputation as something genuinely different on the 1999 comics shelf.
