A key break comes when a bus boy recalls seeing a 1953 convertible parked at the Ferlane house and provides its license number, which leads Detective Yourton to Will Quarry, a mechanic at the furniture factory where both Delia and Mrs. Steckard worked. Under interrogation, Quarry confesses that he killed Delia when she caught him robbing her valuables after she returned home earlier than expected from a dance. Quarry is tried, convicted, and dismissed from the police force, with authorities warning that his serious offenses warrant his dismissal.
