“Live Sacrifice”

In "Live Sacrifice," Tabu faces a dire choice when he imprisons a wind spirit to save his village from ruin, only to provoke the wrath of the wind god in return. As storms and a deadly tornado ravage the land, Tabu negotiates a fragile peace—freeing the spirit in exchange for the village's safety. But when the skies clear, the valley lies barren, and Tabu must use his ancient power to transform four slain elephants into the very trees that will restore life to the land. Written by Robert Lewis and illustrated by Charles Sultan, with a striking cover by Bob Powell, this 1940 Jungle Comics tale blends myth, sacrifice, and the quiet magic of renewal.

To prevent the destruction of a village, Tabu imprisons a wind spirit. This angers the wind god who sends terrible storms, lightning, and a tornado to the village. Tabu agrees to release the spirit if the god will never attack the village again. The god agrees. Once the winds are gone, the villagers discover that their valley is no longer fertile. Tabu transforms four slain elephants into banana, coconut, and breadfruit trees.
