The second story, "Cobra Death" by Major E. L. Dyer, follows Red Sager, a diamond fields trader, as he is bitten by a venomous black cobra while in the African bush and must be treated by a woman named Olga, who shoots the snake and tends to his wounds before he ultimately turns on her in a fit of rage and desperation.
When Kaänga answers the drums summoning him to the Lkuan village, he discovers that maidens have vanished—stolen, the villagers claim, by walking crocodiles. But Kaänga suspects darker magic is at work, especially when he learns that the curse came from Hagua, a banished practitioner of black magic who seeks vengeance for the tribe's harsh treatment of the widows. Racing against time with Ann and N'geeso, Kaänga must uncover Hagua's hidden temple and stop a ritual that threatens the very maidens he's sworn to protect.
War drums echo through the jungle as the Zuzus prepare for battle, dancing and praying to their gods before marching toward the neighboring Wasuni village with dreams of plunder and captives—but the Wasuni chief has been warned and his warriors lie in wait. What unfolds is a fierce clash between two tribes, with the fate of the jungle hanging in the balance.
