In the lead story, Kaanga the Jungle Lord battles a soaring winged creature in "Lair of the Winged Fiend." Wambi the Jungle Boy encounters warriors from the Smoking Mountain who have captured a girl, with aid from a helpful monkey. Capt. Terry Thunder and Fantomah pursue various jungle perils, while in another sequence, armed men attack a peaceful native village, forcing young warrior Halu to leave the village unseen and beat a warning drum to alert his people of the danger.
Kaänga returns from a hunt to find his village under siege by Zuko, a ruthless bird king who commands an army of monstrous vultures—a partnership born when the exiled witch doctor Sawabi promises diamonds in exchange for help capturing the jungle lord. When Zuko's winged raiders kidnap Ann Mason, Kaänga must pole through a treacherous swamp, battle crocodiles and his airborne enemy, and infiltrate the bird king's aerial fortress to rescue her before it all goes up in flames.
Tabu finds himself drawn to a remote volcanic island when a glamorous young woman crash-lands there, her plane wrecked by the storm. As she struggles to survive, Tabu arrives to help—but the pair are quickly captured by fierce warriors from the smoking mountain, bound for a deadly ritual. With ancient magic at his command, Tabu must summon the island’s fury before the volcano claims them both.
Fantomah is accused of poisoning a village, but her investigation leads her to a mountain stream tainted by the remains of a dead mammoth. With the help of Holu and the fierce Fury the leopard, she uses her magic to heal the villagers and guide them toward a safer source of water.
