Jughead: The Hunger #5
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeIssue #5 is the narrative fulcrum of the first story arc of Jughead: The Hunger, delivering the first on-page confirmation that Reggie Mantle has assembled a werewolf pack — including Veronica Lodge and Principal Weatherbee — transforming what had been Jughead's solo flight from the law into a full-blown monster war between rival lycanthrope factions. By forcing Jughead back to Riverdale to confront Reggie rather than merely run from the Coopers, writer Frank Tieri pivots the series from a fugitive chase story into the clan-versus-clan structure that would carry the book through its remaining issues and eventually fuel the crossover with Vampironica. The issue also deepens the Archie Horror universe's habit — established by Afterlife with Archie — of using beloved Riverdale supporting players as horror casualties and antagonists, here weaponizing the friendly rivalry between Jughead and Reggie into something genuinely menacing. As part of the collected Jughead: The Hunger Volume 2 trade paperback (issues #4–8), this issue reaches readers beyond the single-issue market as the dramatic centerpiece of that collection.

The ongoing Jughead: The Hunger series was born from fan and critical demand after the March 2017 one-shot written by Frank Tieri with art by Michael Walsh performed well enough for Archie to greenlight a full series that July. For the ongoing, Tieri was joined by the Kennedy brothers — Pat and Tim — whose previous Archie work included the headline-generating Death of Archie storyline, as well as Joe Eisma, who was brought on beginning with issue #2 to split art duties and help maintain a more regular shipping schedule. By issue #5 (on sale April 18, 2018), the creative engine of Tieri, the Kennedys, and Eisma was well established, with colorists Matt Herms, Kelsey Shannon, and André Szymanowicz providing the book's signature blood-and-shadow palette, and Jack Morelli lettering.
