Jughead's Double Digest #1

History

The Double Digest format itself had been established by Archie Comics earlier in the decade — Archie's Double Digest launched in 1981, pioneering the 256-page newsstand-friendly digest format — and by 1989 the company was ready to extend the concept to its second-most popular solo character. Issue #1 of Jughead's Double Digest was published in October 1989 on a quarterly schedule, with the cover art credited to Jim DeCarlo and Dan DeCarlo, the artist most synonymous with the Archie house style. The series launched as a companion to the existing 32-page Jughead comic book and Jughead With Archie Digest magazine, filling a gap in the market for a larger Jughead-focused anthology. No single writer or editor is publicly credited as the driving editorial force behind the launch; the contents, like all Archie digests, drew on a rotating pool of writers and artists including Frank Doyle, George Gladir, Samm Schwartz, Stan Goldberg, and Harry Lucey.
