History

Archie Comics launched the New Riverdale initiative in December 2014 with an announcement of a rebooted Archie flagship, and Jughead was conceived as the second wave — a companion series set in the same continuity as Waid's book but pitched at a broader comedic register. The series went on sale October 7, 2015, timed to coincide with the publisher's high-profile presence at New York Comic Con 2015, where an exclusive Francesco Francavilla variant cover (limited to 1,000 copies) was sold at the Archie booth. Notably, the indicia of issue #1 mistakenly designates it as volume 2 — it is in fact the third Jughead series — an error corrected in subsequent issues. Archie Comics had briefly attempted a Kickstarter campaign in May 2015 to accelerate Jughead (along with Betty and Veronica and Life with Kevin) to market, but cancelled that campaign five days later after a critical response, ultimately publishing the series through traditional channels regardless.
