Play Press ('Edizioni Play Press'), founded in 1986 by Mario Ferri and already known in Italy for distributing Marvel Comics after the collapse of Editoriale Corno, secured the rights to repackage classic 2000 AD material for an Italian audience in 1991. The series collected short stories previously published in the long-running British weekly 2000 AD, translating and reformatting them for the Italian brossurato (softcover) format. The same year, Play Press also released a companion one-shot special, 'Crimine Futuro' (Play Special #8), demonstrating that the 1991 Dredd launch was a considered editorial push rather than a one-off experiment.
