The 2011 Journey into Mystery revival launched at issue #622 as a companion book to Matt Fraction's The Mighty Thor, with the title restored to its classic name after years as simply Thor; editor Ralph Macchio pitched the Loki-focused concept to Kieron Gillen, who had already been writing Thor from issues #604–614 and saw the assignment as a chance to explore Asgardian politics and morality beyond straightforward battle narratives. Issue #624, cover-dated August 2011 and released June 8, 2011, was written by Gillen with interior pencils by Doug Braithwaite, colors by Ulises Arreola, letters by Clayton Cowles, and a cover painted by Stephanie Hans — whose distinctive painted style on the series' covers became a visual signature of the run. The series was conceived partly in response to the enormous popular surge around Loki following Tom Hiddleston's portrayal in the 2011 Thor film, though Gillen's Kid Loki — a reincarnated child with a guilty conscience — was deliberately distinct from the cinematic version.

The title 'Journey into Mystery' itself received a cultural callback when the fifth episode of the Disney+ Loki series (2021) was named 'Journey into Mystery,' reflecting the broader pop-culture footprint of the 2011 Gillen run and the title's Asgardian associations.
