“Ship of Doom”

Death truly does stalk Jonah Hex on this cover — Ross Andru and Dick Giordano put the scarred bounty hunter in a desperate fight at the edge of a ship's rain-lashed deck, grappling with a man while a shark lunges from the churning waves below and a dark-haired woman looks on in alarm from the rigging. It's a wonderfully pulpy premise — a Western gunfighter against the open sea — that shows DC's willingness in 1982 to take Hex far outside his desert comfort zone. "Ship of Doom" promises exactly the kind of relentless, no-way-out tension the title always delivered so well.
