Johnny Hiro #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis collection gathers the first story arc of Fred Chao's quirky, slice-of-life series, following the misadventures of a hapless sushi chef named Johnny Hiro as he navigates work, romance, and the occasional giant monster attack in a surreal version of New York City. Originally published in 2009 by AdHouse Books, the volume blends everyday struggles with absurdist humor and pop-culture nods.
"Big Lizard in My Backyard" introduces Johnny Hiro in a sharp, offbeat tale from writer-artist Fred Chao, whose distinctive style brings a grounded, slightly surreal edge to this high-stakes delivery run. When Johnny is sent to retrieve a missing shipment of aji, a simple errand spirals into a chaotic chase through New York streets, fueled by fishmongers’ fury and a mystery that’s as much about the cargo as it is about what’s really in the back of Johnny’s truck. The story’s visual flair, from Fred Chao’s dynamic interior art to his moody cover, captures a world where the ordinary quickly tips into the absurd.
