“Batavia's kerkhof”

The concluding chapter of Dabitch and Pendanx's historical trilogy arrives with this striking 2011 Daedalus volume, subtitled Batavia's Kerkhof — "Batavia's Graveyard." Pendanx's cover painting is haunting in its simplicity: a rowboat carrying a group of armed, period-dressed figures cuts across waters that bleed from teal into a deep, unsettling crimson red, while a commanding figure in a broad-brimmed hat and red cloak stands at the stern surveying the scene. That collision of cool ocean and blood-red surface says everything about the dark historical territory Dabitch and Pendanx are navigating with this series.
