Bond is sent to play high-stakes baccarat against Le Chiffre, a KGB paymaster whose job is to raise funds to support the spread of international Communism. Le Chiffre has lost money badly, and must win it back or be murdered by his bosses, which is just what MI-6 wants. With extra financial help from the CIA, Bond wins, but is then captured and tortured-- only to be saved by the arrival of a KGB assassin. With Le Chiffe dead and his mission over, Bond slowly recovers and dreams of quitting the service and marrying Vesper, until he learns the shocking truth about her.
