When Gary eases his way out of Hazel's life, Miss Widdison gives her the address of a good, inexpensive place to go on holiday. At Pensione Neri, Hazel is terrified of the waterside boys she has been warned about, but a man with an English voice comes to her rescue. She enjoys Colin's company for the rest of her holiday. When she returns, Hazel now sees Gary as she saw the waterside boys-handsome, persistent, never doubting their charm, never serious.
