Jeff the Land Shark originated in Kelly Thompson's 2018 West Coast Avengers run: Stefano Caselli designed the land-shark species in issue #1, and one particular small shark caught Thompson's attention, inspiring her to develop it into a named character drawn by Daniele di Nicuolo in issue #7. Thompson has described the character as drawing on shark imagery and the personality of her own pet cats. The Infinity Comics series It's Jeff — a largely wordless, vertical-scroll humor comic illustrated by Gurihiru — launched on Marvel Unlimited in September 2021 and ran for multiple seasons; the Jeff Week spin-off, written and drawn by Gustavo Duarte, ran as a five-issue Infinity Comics series in 2024. It's Jeff: Jeff Week #1 collects the later Thompson/Gurihiru chapters alongside the entirety of Duarte's run into a single 48-page print edition, with additional art contributions from Nao Fuji.
