Iron Man #28 was written by Archie Goodwin — who had helmed the series since its 1968 launch and steered it toward socially conscious, character-driven storytelling — with interior pencils by Don Heck and inks by Johnny Craig, while the cover was rendered by Marie Severin and Mike Esposito. It went on sale May 7, 1970, carrying an August 1970 cover date, placing it squarely at the opening of what collectors now call the Bronze Age. Goodwin's run was notable for reintroducing political and psychological themes to the title, and this issue's use of a hospital-set flashback to humanize Tony through his complicated memories of his father reflects that editorial direction; the issue also features the letters page 'Sock It To Shell-Head,' a regular feature of the era.
