The issue grew directly out of an editorial negotiation between writer Denny O'Neil and editor Mark Gruenwald: Marvel's executive leadership wanted a conventional Iron Man for the upcoming 'Secret Wars' event, while O'Neil's vision demanded that Stark remain too broken to suit up. Their compromise — moving James Rhodes into the armor as a full-time replacement — gave O'Neil the freedom to spend roughly two years chronicling Stark's collapse, with #182 as the intended hinge point where rock bottom and the first breath of recovery finally meet. Jim Shooter served as editor-in-chief, Mike Carlin as assistant editor, and the creative team throughout the arc was anchored by O'Neil's script, Luke McDonnell's pencils, and Steve Mitchell's inks — the same pairing that had illustrated Stark's original relapse in #167.
