Iron Man #12
Iron Man #12 marks the debut of the Controller — Basil Sandhurst — one of Tony Stark's most enduring adversaries, a villain whose core concept (the parasitic, mind-enslaving exoskeleton powered by the cerebral energy of his victims) proved durable enough to carry the character through decades of Marvel storytelling. Archie Goodwin was the original writer of the Iron Man solo series from its very first issue in 1968, having taken over the character from Stan Lee himself in Tales of Suspense; according to Goodwin, he landed the Iron Man assignment almost by accident — Lee was literally working on an Iron Man script when Goodwin walked in to apply for a job and used those very pages as his writer's test. George Tuska had been brought aboard as penciller after it became clear that original artist Johnny Craig could not meet monthly deadlines or satisfy Lee's sense of 'Marvel flair,' making the Goodwin-Tuska pairing the defining creative axis of the title's early years. Issue #12, cover-dated April 1969 and edited by Stan Lee, is the direct product of that partnership, with inks by Johnny Craig and lettering by Art Simek; the Controller was entirely their co-creation, and the story is structured as part one of a two-part arc concluded in issue #13.
