Iron Man #1
Iron Man vol. 4 #1 fired the starting gun on the 'Extremis' arc, widely regarded as one of the definitive Iron Man stories of the modern era and a pivotal creative reset for a character who, at the time of publication, was considered a third-tier Marvel property. Marvel relaunched the Iron Man ongoing series in late 2004 (cover-dated January 2005) in the immediate wake of the 'Avengers Disassembled' crossover, handing the title to Warren Ellis, who signed a temporary exclusive work-for-hire contract with Marvel that year and intentionally avoided reading prior Iron Man material so he could approach the character fresh. Granov came to the project after Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada had flagged him as a 'Young Gun' in 2004 following his painted cover work on the Iron Man Poster Book; the pairing of Ellis and Granov was a direct result of that early cover success. Granov's fully painted, analog-acrylic interior process proved extraordinarily time-intensive — the six-issue arc reportedly consumed roughly a year of production — causing severe shipping delays: Marvel's simultaneously launched Captain America series (under Ed Brubaker) had reached issue #16 by the time all six Extremis chapters had finally appeared.
