About this Collection

Invincible Compendium HC Vol. 2 gathers the narrative spine of Robert Kirkman's entire creator-owned superhero saga — issues #48 through #96 — into a single 1,184-page volume, placing the full arc of Mark Grayson's maturation from reactive teenager to galactic combatant in one accessible read. The chunk of story reprinted here contains what critics and scholars of the series consistently identify as its thematic and narrative center: the debut and brutal first encounter with Conquest (issue #61), the full sweep of the Viltrumite War (#71–78), and the early seeds of Robot's eventual betrayal (#91–96), representing the longest sustained stretch of rising-stakes superhero storytelling Image Comics produced in the 2000s. Released as part of Skybound's yearlong 20th-anniversary program in 2023 — the same period in which the Amazon Prime animated series was drawing massive new audiences to the property — the volume served as the definitive on-ramp for a generation of readers meeting Invincible for the first time through the screen. Its direct-market-exclusive hardcover format honored the comic-shop retail channel that had supported the series since 2003, making the HC itself a meaningful artifact of the anniversary celebration.

History

Skybound Entertainment announced the full suite of 20th-anniversary releases for Invincible in late 2022, with the three-volume hardcover compendium series positioned as a direct-market-exclusive counterpart to the existing mass-market paperback compendiums (the first paperback compendium had originally appeared in 2011). The HC Vol. 2 was written by Robert Kirkman, with interior art by Ryan Ottley (primary penciler across the bulk of issues #48–96), Cory Walker (series co-creator who contributed additional art), and inker Cliff Rathburn; the cover was by Ottley with colors by Dave McCaig. It was published May 24, 2023 by Image Comics / Skybound, carrying Diamond ID MAR230070 and ISBN 9781534399983, and ran to 1,184 pages — a substantially larger page count than Vol. 1 HC's 1,024 pages, reflecting the addition of bonus tie-in issues.
