Initial D was written and illustrated by Shuichi Shigeno and serialized in Kodansha's seinen anthology Weekly Young Magazine from July 17, 1995 through July 29, 2013, spanning 48 collected tankōbon volumes. Shigeno drew on his personal ownership of a Toyota AE86 Trueno and on footage of professional drifting pioneer Keiichi Tsuchiya — who served as the series' editorial supervisor — to ground the manga's racing mechanics in documentable reality. The Kodansha USA omnibus relaunch, announced publicly at Anime Expo 2023, pairs a fresh translation by Kevin Steinbach with cover design by Phil Balsman and lettering credited across the run to Scott O.
