The Tokyopop singles that ran from 2002 to 2009 altered character names, inserted Americanized slang, censored content, and were ultimately discontinued at volume 33, leaving the final 15 volumes of the 48-volume series inaccessible to print readers entirely; this omnibus edition is the first English print format designed to run the full series to completion. Beyond its corrective publishing mission, the volume reintroduces one of the best-selling manga in history — with over 55 million copies in circulation by April 2021 — to a new generation of readers and to the direct-market comic shop channel, which received its own Crunchyroll/direct-market exclusive variant cover. Shuichi Shigeno — already a Kodansha Manga Award winner for his motorcycle racing series Bari Bari Densetsu (1985, shōnen category) — launched Initial D in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine on July 17, 1995, drawing on his personal ownership of a Toyota AE86 Trueno and his exposure to footage of professional drifting pioneer Keiichi Tsuchiya, who also served as the series' editorial consultant. The manga ran for 18 years, concluding July 29, 2013, across 719 chapters collected into 48 tankōbon volumes. In North America, Tokyopop held the initial English license beginning in 2001, publishing 33 volumes from 2002 to 2009 before the Kodansha license expired; Kodansha USA then released the complete 48-volume run digitally via ComiXology in 2019, but that version reused the flawed Tokyopop translation for the first 33 volumes. The 2024 omnibus was announced at Anime Expo on July 1, 2023, and represents a ground-up retranslation by Kevin Steinbach with new lettering by Scott O. Brown and redesigned covers by Phil Balsman — the first time the opening chapters have received a fully fresh English treatment in print.
