Painted Thunder waits to ambush the Iroquois warrior Raven as his tribe launches their canoes, seeing this as his chance to capture his enemy before the others escape downstream. Painted Thunder slips into the river to pursue Raven's canoe, but Raven deliberately slows his pace to separate from the group, forcing Painted Thunder to paddle faster to catch up. After Raven's canoe rounds a bend out of sight of the other warriors, Painted Thunder catches him, leading to a confrontation where a character named False Face challenges Painted Thunder to single combat using a wooden mask to see things clearly, ultimately settling a dispute between the Iroquois and Huron tribes without further bloodshed.
