The main story, "White Eagle," introduces a new feature character and follows a conflict between Native American tribes. After Cheyenne warriors raid a Sioux trading post and steal supplies while burning the storehouse, the Sioux wise chief counsels patience rather than immediate retaliation, declaring this the first of many disasters to come. A young warrior named Tall Calf receives a mystical vision from a bear spirit guiding him westward on a journey, which he undertakes with a companion named Little Lance. The two young men barely escape pursuit by a Sioux war party, and after their adventure, Little Tree returns home feeling ashamed, spurring the jealous young warriors of his tribe, though the chief expresses faith that one day they will be proud to honor him.
