Illustrierte Klassiker #244
Part of BSV Hannover's long-running Illustrierte Klassiker series — "Die spannendsten Geschichten der Weltliteratur" — issue #244 turns its attention to "Schwarze Amerikaner: Die frühen Jahre," a tribute to pioneering Black Americans. Norman Nodel's cover painting brings together a compelling ensemble of historical figures: a dignified elder statesman with a commanding white beard and hair dominates the composition, flanked by a man at a laboratory bench with scientific glassware, a formally dressed gentleman, a woman in period dress holding what appears to be a rifle, a Union soldier on horseback, and a tender bedside scene — all rendered against a warm, ochre-toned backdrop with an American flag visible in the distance. It's a richly layered composition that conveys the breadth and significance of these early years with real respect and visual storytelling craft.
