Susan's mother has a weak heart and the slightest shock can be fatal. Susan overheard the doctor say the condition was congenital and how the daughters of mothers with that condition often inherit it. Convinced she has her mother's weak heart condition, Susan refuses to allow Tom Derring to be anything more than a friend although she longs to be held and kissed by him.
