About this Issue

I Heart Skull-Crusher! #10 (June 2025) is the series finale of writer Josie Campbell and artist Alessio Zonno's ten-issue post-apocalyptic sports saga, bringing Trini's journey through the deadly Screaming Pain Ball tournament to a full narrative close with the fate of the Dome itself on the line. As the concluding chapter of a consciously queer, manga-influenced YA story set in a ravaged America, it marks the creative bookend of what Campbell has described as her long-desired first wholly original creator-driven comic — a personal landmark for one of the medium's most prominent crossover voices between animation and comics. The series, published under BOOM! Studios' BOOM! Box imprint alongside titles like Lumberjanes and Giant Days, affirms that imprint's ongoing commitment to original, creator-led work centered on underrepresented voices. Critics described the issue as a tonally satisfying conclusion, noting that Campbell and Zonno successfully delivered the emotional payoff the full run had been building toward.

History

The series was conceived by Josie Campbell as her first creator-owned comic — a deliberate departure from her prior work exclusively on DC Universe titles — and was announced in December 2023 for a March 2024 launch under the BOOM! Box imprint, with series editor Dafna Pleban shepherding it through production. The original run was initially structured as a five-issue arc (issues #1–5), but reader response was strong enough that BOOM! Studios announced a continuation at San Diego Comic-Con, with the second arc (issues #6–10) beginning in October 2024 — effectively expanding what had been a miniseries into a ten-issue complete story. The creative team remained consistent across both arcs: Campbell writing, Zonno on interior art, Angel De Santiago on colors, and Jim Campbell lettering, giving the series a unified visual and tonal identity from debut to finale. For Italian artist Alessio Zonno, the series represented his first creator credit on an American comic, after a career that had primarily been built in France and Belgium.
